Term 5

Welcome Back! We hope that you have had a great Easter break and have enjoyed a wonderful time with family and friends. We look forward to doing lots of exciting learning this term!

‘Inventors’

This term, our theme is Inventors with an emphasis on History and DT skills. This term, the children will be learning about all different inventors. This includes Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Ada Lovelace and The Wright Brothers. We will also be creating our own inventions in our DT lessons, designing and making a freestanding structure for our playground. We can't wait to see what we invent!

As part of our English work, we will be creating fact files about different inventions or inventors. We will be looking at different non-fiction texts to help us create our own interesting fact files. This term, we will also be looking at creating instructions using imperative verbs all about our inventions.

Homework Tasks and Expectations:

Reading

Please continue to read with your children as much as possible. We recommend short daily reading opportunities and regularly rereading familiar books- this can really help to build fluency and develop sight reading skills. It is also important to remember to ask simple questions as you go as this will help children's comprehension. These could be about what has just happened, how a character is feeling, why they choose to do something or what might happen next. It is also important to discuss new vocabulary with children.

Phonics

If your child finds phonics difficult, it is really important that they regularly recap the learnt phonemes from their phonic sessions in school. This helps children overlearn the phonemes and supports them with recognising the phoneme as graphemes which not only supports fluency in reading but is really important for writing too. Below are some links to some simple videos with Mrs Elford to help your child recap phonemes for phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 5. Practising this daily as part of reading opportunities can really help make fantastic progress. We recommend that your child watches it once to listen and repeat and then mute the video to say the sound that Mrs Elford is holding up!

Spelling

Spelling is an important part of Literacy and is a contributing factor in meeting Age Related Expectations (ARE). Particular attention is given to Common Exception Words which are words that the government feel all children should be able to read and spell by the end of KS1. Each week we expect that children choose between 3 and 5 words from the CEW lists to practise (you may want to start with ones that you find tricky or simply work down the list). To help remember the spelling patters we encourage the use of rainbow writing, pyramid writing or simply using a Look, Cover, Write, Check (LCWC) approach- what ever works best for you. As a challenge, we would like to see children using their chosen spellings in a sentence to practise applying the words to sentences. All Year 1 and Year 2 CEWs can be accessed using the links below.

Home Learning:

As the number of COVID cases starts to drop, we will no longer post new home learning onto our website. However, we do recognise there will still be some need for children to isolate from school. Should this be the case, your child’s teacher will be send you home learning tasks and resources in line with school tasks.
