Linked below here is the current yearly theme overview for 2019 - 2020. This is currently under review in light of curriculum and school changes.
Term 1: Across the Drawbridge
To kick start the year we are excited that our topic will be titled Across the Drawbridge. Across the Drawbridge will enable us to share traditional stories with Knights, Dragons and Princesses taking centre stage whilst also allowing us to look at what life in a castle was really like. We will also be visiting the real life ruins of Farleigh Hungerford Castle and even hold our very own medieval banquet in Castle Paulton Infants with a very special guest appearance.
Term 2: Sweets Galore
What a sweet way to start Term 2. Our next topic is called Sweets Galore and will take us right up to our Christmas celebrations. We will be thinking about where sweets and chocolates come from as well as how they are made before designing some of our own creations following inspiration from Mr Willy Wonka himself. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be our focus text this term and we will use it within our Literacy work to write descriptively about settings and characters. Of course, we will also begin to recognise traditions and celebrations of Christianity and be getting into the spirit of Christmas as we approach December where we will have a performance of 'Children Around the World'.
Term 3: Pole to Pole
Welcome back! We hope you have had a fantastic Christmas break and are relaxed and ready for our next topic called Pole to Pole. This exciting topic will have a geography focus where we look at continents, countries and oceans of the world with a particular focus on the Arctic and the Antarctic. We will also be thinking about habitats (with a particular focus on Polar regions), different animals and how they are adapted to live in such cold places. Further work will involve us thinking about historical individuals like Scot of the Antarctic and we will even be welcoming a real life explorer to the school. Now first thing’s first, which pole is the coldest?
Term 4: Superheroes
Calling all superheroes! This term our topic is the idea of superheroes and part of our topic will be recognising how we are all superheroes in our own way. We will be learning about fictional superheroes and basing our written work on extraordinary beings who can shoot lasers from their eyes or battle 50ft monsters (What amazing heroes they are!) In addition to this we will be thinking about heroes of the past such as Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela and Emmeline Pankhurst and how they changed the world as well as also recognising everyday heroes of today. We are very fortunate that later in the term we will be visited by the police who will talk about their job and how they keep us safe and even show us some of their amazing equipment. Let’s hope they remember to bring the keys for the handcuffs!
