Art and Design Technology

At Paulton Infant School we aim for our Art and Design Technology teaching and learning to engage, inspire and challenge pupils. We give them both the  knowledge and skills to experiment and create their own works of art, craft and design. We have a clear focus on ‘process not product’ and all children’s achievements are recognised and valued. Clear skills are taught and children are then able to apply their skills in a range of creative and practical activities.

We aim to instil a love of food preparation, cooking and promote the enjoyment of a range of foods as part of a healthy balanced diet. We also recognise the importance of cooking as an important life skill; children are taught for example how to cut fruit and vegetables, take part in preparing ingredients and the importance of tidying up afterwards.

Key stage 1

In Art and Design our children are taught:

  • to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products

  • to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination

  • to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space

  • about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work

In Design Technology our children are taught to:

  • design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria

  • generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and, where appropriate, information and communication technology

  • select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks [for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing]

  • select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their characteristics

  • explore and evaluate a range of existing products

  • evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria

Technical knowledge

  • build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable

  • explore and use mechanisms [for example, levers, sliders, wheels and axles] in their products

In Cooking and Nutrition our children are taught to:
